I was thrilled to find this Notebook Companion. We purchased The 50 States books awhile back and my daughter loves to look through the book. She enjoys writing and journaling because it helps her to remember and process the information she is reading. This Notebook Companion is perfect! Your child will label a state map, color a flag, answer questions on facts about that state, and fill in a timeline. This is not your typical book with a few basic facts about each state. It’s full of interesting information and noticed my daughter’s answers were based on her interests. I love the freedom the Notebook Companion guided her to answer a topic, but she was able to write about what she found interesting.

Notebooking through the 50 states is an unique approach to learning about the different states. There are three notebooking pages per state starting with Alabama. The companion book The 50 States: Explore the U.S. brings learning geography to a whole different level. This is not a ‘rivers, mountains, geographical features’ type of book. This is a ‘key facts, inspiring people, moments to remember’ map fact book. I love that it dives so much deeper into understanding the social studies aspect of each state. It covers who is important, what shaped the state’s culture, and more! This notebook companion allows the child to write in the answers or draw their answers. At the back of the notebook companion, there are two blank maps, one for labeling each state and one for dividing the US into regions. There is also a timeline at the back of the book so you can see when each state became a state. This is such a cool resource for anybody starting US geography! I think this could be used at the 3rd grade level and up.

This notebook is a mixture of art, history, and social studies. Your child will be drawing the flags of each state, learning a little about its people and history, and discovering important landmarks. Facts such as capital cities and regions will be covered. Each state in the notebook has a mini timeline. In the end, there is a statehood timeline to relate everything to the union.

You can make use of the bonus lesson plan to help pace this book and notebook (if you plan to purchase everything in the 50 States Notebook Series).
