Ocean Notebook - A Notebook Companion™ to Ocean Anatomy

Take a dive and discover the depths of the ocean with your students. Explore sea creatures and learn why the sea is salty. Ocean Anatomy is a much-loved resource by Julia Rothman. Our Ocean Notebook allows your student to take a deep dive into ocean life, layers of the ocean, the ocean floor, tide pools, coral reefs and so much more!

The Ocean Notebook is intended to be used alongside Ocean Anatomy by Julia Rothman. It includes written narration using open-ended questions, drawing, labeling, and more.

What is the difference between a dolphin and a porpoise? Why is the sea salty? Do you know how much kelp grows in a day? Do they love to study sharks, whales, and other creatures of the deep?

Answers to these questions among many more will be answered in Storey Publishing’s Ocean Anatomy. With the publisher’s permission we have created the Ocean Notebook which will take you and your students on a deep dive of the ocean.

“My 9 year old wants to be a Naturalist when she grows up. She took about 4 months to complete Ocean Anatomy and can now hold full conversations with ADULTS who work in Marine Biology. I am often asked how my daughter knows so much about nature science and I send them to these workbooks. My art loving daughter loves the layout of each page and it helps retaining the knowledge inside the book. We print them out and stick them in a 3 ring binder. She feels so proud after completing a full binder and we have wonderful drawings as keepsakes!” – C. Lyons

Many homeschooling families incorporate the study of ocean life into their lessons. If you plan to use Ocean Anatomy in your homeschool, you’ll want to grab the Ocean Notebook to go alongside it. The Ocean Notebook will be a great way to squeeze all the educational content out of the book and leave you with a beautiful notebook full of all-things ocean.

Ocean Anatomy is a secular book and our Notebook Companion™ can be used with any worldview (see note below). Although this notebook is very flexible and can be adapted for younger and older children, it is best suited to grades 3-8.

The Ocean Notebook will follow along with the topics in the book and include places for written narration of information read, sketches of objects found in the ocean, labeling and diagramming, and more.

We have included links in the Ocean Notebook for extra free printables and resources to expand your study on individual topics.

Like our other open & go curriculum, there is no prep-work involved – you simply grab your copy of the book and your notebooking journal and work at your own pace.

We also have Notebook Companions™ for other volumes in the Julia Rothman Series. Click here to view them.

NOTE: We are young earth creationists and have found it difficult to use many nature and science books without having to skim over at least one reference to age of earth. We have highlighted these sections for you in the beginning of the notebook and have not included questions related to them so you can skip over them if you choose.

We have had such a wonderful time working through this notebook on Ocean Anatomy.

I’ve printed out two full notebooks for us to use as a family – my daughter (11) is able to work it on her own while I assist my son (7) with the other notebook.

It has been so much fun putting this together and working it as a family – we have also been to our local aquarium a few times since we’ve started the notebook.

Thank you for such a wonderful project!

  2. Amberly May

Ocean Anatomy is my children’s favorite Julie Rothman book and this notebook takes it to the next level! The note booking pages are laid out in a way where my children can work independently and that’s something I can appreciate as a busy homeschooling mom! I highly recommend this companion guide!

  3. Aspen Allen

I love that right off the bat there are a bunch of extra resources listed in the front. Ocean animals are a favorite in our house and I know my kids can’t wait to dive into this subject. We’re a little ways out, but I know once we’re there they will be so ecstatic!

  4. Sarah J

I bought the Rothman books a few years ago and had difficulty getting my students to engage with them. These notebooks have been game changers. Both of my students are dysgraphic and these have a great balance of writing vs. drawing. They have been willingly working through their notebooks and retaining the majority of what they read.

I could not be happier with this purchase and will be using these in the future!

  5. Jennifer Zimmer

My daughter (9yrs) is really enjoying the Ocean Anatomy Notebook! She loves drawing so this notebook was the perfect fit for her. I love that she is learning so much about the ocean and is retaining the information! We can’t wait to start the next notebook! Thank you for creating such a fun way to learn!

This just delights me to no end! Thank you for sharing. My kids have always thrived with notebooking, especially my oldest. I am glad she is loving our Notebook Companions!

  7. C Spalding

This is the third of the Julia Rothman series that my 9 year-old daughter has done and she loves doing it. She loves to draw and learn about the different aspects of marine life. Next she wants to do the notebook pages that go with the Master books Ocean Book. Thank you for providing these resources that make learning fun.

  8. K Roberts

I’m so exited to add this to our homeschool curriculum lineup. I ordered the Anatomy Notebook Collection, and it looks awesome! I’m so grateful for these wonderful notebooks so that my kids can read and glean information from wonderful books like the Julia Rothman Collection. Thank you for the work you do setting up these notebooks!

  9. A Wolf

I am in love with the Julia Rothman books but wasn’t sure how to go about incorporating them into our homeschool day. Enter Daily Skill Building Notebook. This journal is amazing. The amount of time that must have gone into building this notebook is unbelievable. The Farm book was the first one I purchased and I was so blown away I knew I had to get the Ocean and Food Anatomy journals as well. My 11 and 14 year olds have really enjoyed these journals! I highly recommend them!

  10. Robin Larson

The Julia Rothman Books are beautiful. I so appreciate the open and go companion notebooks. We use these as a supplement to our Master Books, and it is perfect! My kids are 10 & 12 and both enjoy it.

  11. Marcia Cabaday

I am not sure why I put off buying this. The books are beautiful and so is this journal to do with it.

My two girls (ages 17 and 9) have both loved it.

  12. Yvie

Our middle schooler isn’t a huge fan of school, but he loves visiting the ocean! He fancies himself something of a marine biologist, so when we saw Ocean Anatomy and this accompanying workbook, we gave it a go. This workbook helps walk you through the Julia Rothman text – you’ll definitely need it – letting student re-create drawings and write notes from the text to help reinforce concepts covered…..and he loved it!
