Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park is considered the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast. It is located in Maine, along the Atlantic Coastline and protects the rocky headlands on the coast. It is one of the top 10 most visited national parks in the United States.

One of the main attractions to the park is the preserved historical carriage roads. These roads cannot be driven on by a car and must be travelled by foot, horseback riding or biking.

This was recorded in July of 1913. Summer temperatures average around 120 degrees daily, though the winter months are very pleasant and cooler.

One of the best things to do in this park is to visit the swamp by air boat. Air boat rides are fun for the whole family and a must do here. They take you through canals and open water areas where you will get to see many different animals, birds and lots of alligators.

Make sure to hit the visitor centers. The Flamingo Visitor Center is the best chance to spot manatees and American crocodiles. Yes, even crocodiles can be found in the Everglades. It is actually the only place in the world where crocodiles and alligators live together.

Glacier Bay National Park is a biosphere reserve and a world heritage site. It contains some of the most impressive tidal glaciers in the world. There are more than 50 named glaciers located in the park.

Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park is located on the surrounding waters of Lake Superior in Michigan. It is a rugged, isolated island, and the only way to visit it is by a boat or sea plane. It is actually one of the least visited national parks in the USA.

Older kids will get excited for the rugged, adventure feeling of going to a large island in the middle of a lake. There are also 400 tiny islands that can be explored by boat from this one main island. Scuba diving is popular here because the waters are so cold. You can see some shipwrecks that are very well preserved.

This is a difficult park to access since you can not drive to it. If you want to visit the neighboring islands by kayak you need to be an experienced boater. This would be a fun place to take adventurous teens, but probably not suitable for small children because of the travel time by boat and all the walking.

Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park is located in Montezuma, Colorado.

This park protects some of the best-preserved Ancestral Puebloan archaeological cliff dwelling homes. It is one of the most fascinating national parks to explore due to the rich architecture and history of the people that used to have their homes built in the cliffs.

Kids will enjoy touring, exploring the cliff dwellings, and hearing about the history of the park. Many of the cliffs are accessible, and you can walk directly through them on a hike. This is another one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that is very educational.

Not only is this the largest archaeological preserve in the United States it is also an International Dark Sky Park. Make sure you stay for an evening star gazing; the sky is breathtaking.

Olympic National Park

There are not many roads in this park, so the best way to explore it is by hiking through the forests and exploring the different ecosystems. Don’t let that deter you from bringing your children, as there are some amazing things for kids to do here.

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.

These parks are located side by side. They are considered two separate parks but you only need admission to one to visit both of them. Sequoia National Park is 631 square miles; Kings Canyon National Park was established 50 years later in and is 722 square miles.

The parks are known as the Land of Giants because it is home to the giant sequoia trees in the forests. There are some amazing hiking trails for the whole family to wander through the giant forests and experience the trees up close. These trees are so big that you can even drive a car through them!

Another great experience is to explore the Crystal Caves, which is a cavern made of marble. The only way to visit the cave is by signing up for a guided tour. These tours are always so educational, fun and even a little adventurous.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is located in Tennessee and North Carolina on the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

This park is one of the most family friendly national parks. You can hike to a waterfall, and there are many perfect spots set aside just to take a picnic. You can even take a bike ride or auto tour of Cades Cove. In the summer you can go tubing down the river that runs through the park.

There are many junior ranger programs activities here. Kids can get badges by participating in blacksmithing, creating an old fashioned toy, taking hay rides, and more.

Monarch butterflies do their annual migration here from August to October. If you are studying insects and come during those months, you won’t want to miss it as they fly through the higher elevations in the park.

Virgin Islands National Park

Virgin Islands National Park is located in St. Thomas, in the United States Virgin Islands.

Besides the water being the main feature, there is some amazing history here. You can explore 200-year-old ruins from when Danish plantation owners lived and owned slaves.

Take a hike through the forest to find Petroglyphs made by the ancient Taino Indians. The petroglyphs are beautiful carved images and they are located at the base of a waterfall surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Yellowstone National Park
