Learning About Puffins - A Gail Gibbons Notebook Companion™
Learning About Puffins follows the work of scientists from the National Audubon Society as they observe Atlantic puffins off the coast of Maine and work to protect them. There’s no prep work for you to worry about finding time to do. Just grab a copy of The Puffins Are Back! (sold separately) and Learning About Puffins and follow them together at the pace that is right for your family.
The book and Notebook Companion™ start by looking at how puffins return regularly to the area to mate and raise their young. It follows the puffins from the time the young chicks are born until they are ready to live on their own. Along the way, it explains how the scientists study and try to protect the puffins and shows kids how puffins live and grow.
Students will practice written narration as they answer our open-ended questions about what they are learning. They’ll also learn more about puffins as they study the illustrations so they can draw and sketch pictures of what they are learning. Bonus coloring pages are also included!

Denise Rodriguez –
My children enjoyed this book and notebook companion. The story tells of the dedication scientists who protected the puffin population and details that went into the work to re populate them. This notebook companion has a wonderful balance of writing, drawing, and coloring. This felt like a very complete study!
Katherine Tanyu –
This is another one of the “Learning About” series that is a darling to enjoy. I personally would not think about puffins when studying animals, because they are not the most common. And that is what makes this notebook companion and notebooking pages a fun study. Your child will learn about the conservatory efforts of scientists in protecting this animal. Get a dose of history, geography, and science all in one in this notebook. The spaces for written narration are sufficient for answering the discussion questions. I love the drawing prompts, and the bonus coloring pages are always a welcome addition for younger students. This notebook is shorter than usual, but it is packed and more than enough for your young ornithologist.
